Resumé

The thesis focuses on socio-spatial inequalities in mental health, as well as the impact of places on mental health, with a specific emphasis on social conditions within individuals' neighborhoods. This article-based thesis comprises four self-contained research papers that utilize a combination of Danish population-wide register data and survey data. The data encompass information on mental health, stress, suicide, and the purchase of psychiatric medication, as well as socioeconomic and sociodemographic characteristics at the individual, family, and neighborhood levels linked to geographical data divided into socially homogeneous micro-areas.

The empirical findings show that different neighborhood social characteristics are related to various aspects of mental health. Moreover, the findings demonstrate that the operationalization of neighborhoods plays a critical role for the empirical results when studying socio-spatial inequalities and neighborhood effects on mental health outcomes. Using administrative areas alone may result in underestimating or overlooking significant associations and socio-spatial inequalities. Additionally, the research identifies neighborhood trust as a contextual mechanism that explains socio-spatial inequalities in mental health, and that growing up in socioeconomically deprived neighborhoods during early childhood may have long-term effects on stress in early adulthood.

In conclusion, the thesis emphasizes the significance of the nearby social environment within individuals' neighborhoods for mental health. Therefore, it is important to consider neighborhood factors for mental health, in addition to the well-known individual-level risk and protective factors.
